Cthulhu on South Park

Cthulhu lives! He made an appearance on the newest South Park episode (S14E11 Coon 2: Hindsight, watch it here), when British Petroleum wakes him up from his sleep. The first part of a two-parter, the episode itself was okay. Nothing special, basic South Park for people who have watched it for ages. The episodes from the past few seasons have all been hit-or-meh, but I’m still gonna keep watching it for those rare diamonds.

The Call of Cthulhu

I’ve been hearing references to The Call of Cthulhu and other H.P. Lovecraft works for years now (especially on Pharyngula), so on a recent visit to the Iso Omena library I borrowed a book with two of his short stories: The Call of Cthulhu and The Whisperer in Darkness.

To my surprise these stories had some of the most vivid images of horror I’ve ever encountered. They feel much more threatening than any horror movie, which these days rely on editing and loud noises. Once I started reading The Call of Cthulhu I couldn’t put it down. I couldn’t wait to find out what happened on the next page, so I had to keep reading… Fortunately, the stories aren’t that long, so it was possible for me to read them straight through. 🙂

After I read both stories I started looking for more information on Google and happened to find both stories available on the net, for free! Here are the links: The Call of Cthulhu and The Whisperer in Darkness.

I dare you to read one chapter of either one and not finish the rest of it…

If you do manage to finish both of them and crave for more, Wikisource (which seems to be an excellent resource for online books and short stories) has more stories related to the Cthulhu mythos.

No more fhtagning here, obviously.
